‘Friend of the Submitters’ – Proposed Men’s Prison at Wiri

Campbell Brown Planning Limited was appointed by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to act as a ‘Friend of the Submitters’ in relation to this major project.

The Department of Corrections has lodged a Notice of Requirement with the EPA to enable the establishment of a new men’s prison at Wiri, in South Auckland. The proposed prison would be located adjacent to the existing women’s prison, and would accommodate up to 1500 inmates.

In recognition of the scale and significance of this project, the EPA recommended to the Minister for the Environment that the proposal be referred to a Board of Inquiry for determination. The Minister has accepted the EPA’s recommendation.

Campbell Brown, in its capacity as ‘Friend of the Submitters’, assisted prospective submitters to put together effective and clear submissions through the statutory process. The role is neutral, and independent of any other party. Campbell Brown’s extensive experience in resource management hearing processes enabled it to offer helpful and accurate assistance to submitters. This experience not only benefited the submitters, but assisted with ensuring that the overall process ran efficiently.
